What shitty band are you in?

Ah, the standard "it's been awhile" post. Self-loving bloggers post often for awhile, then claim business (busyness) will decelerate the posting, then stop posting without notice, then come back and say "I know it's been awhile, but..." then fall off the face of the earth.

I'll try and buck that trend. Yes, Audioscrobbler has made most "Now Playing..." posts obsolete, and has exposed my embarrassing affinity for the occasional Trey Anastasio song. My hipster cred has been dashed. It's also hot. As in, the low temp over the next few days will be 80 degrees. The National Weather Service has melted.

So, how about some hot summer jams, with notes?

1. My Morning Jacket - Off the Record
This is a new song, off their forthcoming album Z. I'm reserving judgment on this one as a piece of MMJ's ouevre, but for now I'll enjoy it for what it is - a poppy MMJoint that separates the wheat (MMJ's song) from the chaff (MMJ's jamminess). Literally. It's about 2.5 minutes of J. Geils-y bouncy rock with reggae in its pocket, followed by 2.5 minutes of noodling, with some backwards vocals thrown in. The good news: singer Jim "Jamie" James's voice sounds good even without being buried in MMJ's trademark reverb. The bad news: some have said it sounds like Dispatch.

2. The Hold Steady - Stevie Nix
I've got the Hold Steady on heavy rotation right now. It's pretty damn good, and a Springsteen apologist like myself can really dig into the lyrics. Plus, it rocks like a windows-open, dozen-beer drinkin, 70s rock-referencin song should. Craig Finn has the highs and lows of drink/drug parties rustily nailed.

3. Donovan - Season of the Witch
I've been trying to find the (I Shot Andy Warhol OST) Luna cover of this song, which people break out in October but sounds like it belongs in the last week of July, but I'll be satisfied with the original. I freely admit, I do not get the lyrics, and I don't get Donovan in general. I know it's rumored that somebody cool may play guitar on the original, but who cares, it sounds fantastic (gasp) forty years later.

#s 2 and 3 are available through iTunes. Technorati #1, someone will have it.
